Valencia – main producer of Pomegranate in Spain
The Valencia region is one of the main growers of pomegranate in Spain, Spain being the leading producer in Europe. Pomegranate from Valencia is mainly known for its sweet, soft-seeded varieties, the most famous one being Mollar de Elche.
Varieties
Acco
Early variety. Flavour is sweet-tart and balanced, seeds are soft and juicy, with a bright red colour.
Wonderful
Flavour is more acidic and tart-sweet, the seeds are firmer and have a deep red colour. Good shelf life, great for export. Larger fruit size.
Mollar de Elche
The most traditional variety, used for both fresh consumption and juice. The flavour is sweet and has a low acidity. The seeds are very soft and pale pink to red.
Valenciana
Less common variety. Flavour is very sweet and has a low acidity, seeds are light pink to reddish.
Smith
Increasing in popularity, good for both fresh use and processing. Seeds are red and juicey, with a good balance of sweetness and acidity.
