Fresh winter supply from Spain

Spanish kiwis are usually harvested from October to November, then available stored fruit until May. Peak Spanish export being December to March, when the kiwis have top flavour and freshness. Main production area in Spain is Galicia, followed by Asturias, Basque country and Navarra.

Kiwis from Spain have a balanced sweetness and acidity, with high juice content and a firm texture. The most common variety is the green Hayward, although yellow kiwi is rising in popularity.

Green kiwis

Nov — May

Green flesh, hairy skin, balanced sweet-acid taste and good storage capacity. Represent most of the Spanish production. Varieties like Hayward, Bruno, Monty, Abbot.

Yellow kiwis

Oct — Apr

Smooth skin, no fuzz, with a sweeter, tropical flavour, lower acidity and consumer friendly. Varieties like SunGold and Jin Tao.

Red kiwis

Oct — Mar

Red centre, very sweet and aromatic, with high antioxidant content. Varieties like Hongtang and Rossy Red.
